People have described life in so many ways. In many discussions’ life is compared with different sports such as running, a game of cricket, hockey, boxing etc.
For people living in this age, life is a race. That too, a Hundred Meter race. Fast & Furious. Everyone wants to pick up the speed at the word Go. Reach the peak of your speed and spear ahead in a flash. Everyone wants to start early and finish early. Want to run for everything and accomplish it ASAP as if there is no tomorrow. Want to triumph significant milestones very early in their life.
The majority of teenagers want to shine in their lives in the shortest possible time. Whether it is breaking the world record, earning money, getting famous, establishing their career, achieving milestones in their life etc. We salute them for their clarity of thoughts, determination, hard work and focus. They, at times, put their entire golden years at stake and achieve name and fame for themselves. We as a society also applaud their heroics and what they have achieved at such a young age. But at times, one question comes to mind, whether life is a hundred-meter race or a marathon?
When you know you have to live life for 80 to 90 years (as the life expectancy has gone up in the last couple of decades or so), you have to prepare for it in a way to live long enough. Similarly, when we know your professional journey will be longer, one has to prepare and know when to slow down and when to reach the peak and when to accelerate. We all know the story of hare and tortoise – “slow and steady wins the race”.
But we believe that story does not hold good in the current age. Today we live in the age of social media validation; life is as short as your last deliverable, last post, last reel, last video, or last content on your status. People’s memory is very short. You need to get the eyeballs every day to remain in the limelight, and we all live our life by someone’s validation.
When we see the period shortening from incubation to unicorns, we also aspire to achieve everything in the shortest possible time. Be it health, wealth, or fame. I admire those who can succeed at an early stage in their lives. But if someone cannot match the speed with their peers and is left behind in their professional journey, how to prepare oneself to face all the internal and external challenges? I will go back to our ancestors, and in Kavya Vinod, in one of the shlok, it says
(Slowly, one needs its journey to reach the end; One should weave slowly; Slowly, one needs to reach the top of the mountain while climbing; it takes time to become a Yogi or acquiring knowledge and obtaining money is also achieved in due course of time (slowly) by constant effort.)
I believe it is a very apt shlok at all times and particularly in the current age. We need to prepare for the marathon called life. It requires you to prepare for the long term and train yourself to be slow and consistent with your efforts and plan phases of your life for the long term.
Preparing for life is like training for a marathon – it is a high impact activity, and one
should not do “too much too soon”. Doing too much too soon doesn’t give your mind and body ample time to reflect, leading to unintended stress. Give yourself time to prepare, think, attempt and excel. Be consistent with your efforts. It does not happen overnight.
Today, every youngster wants to make a statement as soon as they have completed studies, taken their first job or started their venture. Everything worthwhile requires time and consistent efforts to shine. It is an old saying that when one plants mango trees, they know that fruits will be enjoyed by their second generation. Despite that, they plant the tree. But, alas, who has time to wait in this age of instant gratification? We need to think, plan, pose/reflect upon, act, believe in ourselves, upgrade and be consistent with what we do to achieve in life without giving much attention to so-called perceived competition and social media validation. Life is not a hundred-meter race; it’s a marathon.

Awesome insides of the thoughts 👍🏻
Thanks Anmol.
Very true sir….
Winning doesn’t always mean being first. Winning means you are doing better than you have done before.
Yes Abhay, rightly said.
Yes very well said Sir. The people who are running 100 meters usually burnout and this was a trend not very long back. But COVID gave a breather to people to think out on life, their precious life. One thing that I have learnt is that everyone is in his/her own journey and that they don’t have to compare it with others. Also people like Falguni Nayar of Nykaa, Savitri Jindal of Jindal industries, Harland Sanders of KFC, to name a few have proved that age is no bar to achieve name and fame. We have to unlearn & relearn to live a balanced life with nature, relationships, ourselves and get the strength & foresight to handle all ours tasks and achieve the success we are always yearning for. Amazing blog Sir.
Thanks, Kamal for sharing. Really getting a different perspective from all of you open ups my mind’s window and fills up with fresh air of thoughts. It is so beautifully described by you.
Lovely insight. Worth implementing
Thanks Jigneshbhai
Life…. what is life?… that itself is a fundamental question…the answer we each are trying to find….we all tries to find the meaning of life… Each has their own meaning and their own perspective and therefore each of us has their own passion….
Rightly said, Bharat. At times I am having a question, why human life to me. Why God has selected me?
Wonderful reading.Liked this.
This slowly and steadily unlearning and learning is the need of the time. Giving that required time to yourself patiently is a need, everyone should understand..exactly explained by you.
Believe on yourself : really aptly said Sir.
Thanks Shama
Superb written……very true fact.
Thanks, Raksha. I really liked the story you shared on Whatsapp with me w.r.t. this blog. Though a little lengthy but I would like to share the same with all the readers. It was thought-provoking.

Well! No one has ever bothered to ask Hare his side of the story. So let me tell you the story from a different point of view…
I met the Hare and sat down with him for a heart to heart talk.
Believe me, it was a wonderful experience. He said…
Yes, I am the hare who lost.
No, I did not get lazy or complacent.
Let me explain said the hare…
I was hopping over the meadows near the hills and looked back to realize that the tortoise was nowhere to be seen.
Assured of my healthy lead, I decided to take a short nap under the large banyan tree near the pond.
The anticipation of the race had kept me up all night.
For days, that old silly tortoise had boasted about his ability to plod for hundreds of miles without stopping.
Life is a marathon, he said, not a sprint. I wanted to show him that I could run both far and fast.
The shade of the tree was like an umbrella.
I found an almost oval rock, covered it with grass, and turned it into a makeshift pillow.
I could hear the leaves rustling and the bees buzzing – it felt they were collaborating and even conspiring to put me to sleep.
And it didn’t take them long to succeed.
I saw myself drifting on a log in a beautiful stream of water.
As I came near the shore, I found an old man, with a flowing beard, sitting on a rock in a meditative pose. He opened his eyes, gave me an all-knowing smile, and asked:
“Who are you?”
“I am a hare. I am running a race.”
“Why?”
“To prove to all the creatures in the jungle that I am the fastest.”
“Why do you want to prove that you are the fastest?”
“So that I get a medal which will give me status which will give me money which will get me food…”
“There is already so much food around.” He pointed to the forest in the distance. “Look at all those trees laden with fruits and nuts, all those leafy branches”
“I also want respect. I want to be remembered as the fastest hare who ever lived.”
“Do you know the name of the fastest deer or the largest elephant or the strongest lion who lived a thousand years before you?”
“No.”
“Today you have been challenged by a tortoise.
Tomorrow, it will be a snake.
Then it will be a zebra.
Will you keep racing all your life to prove that you are the fastest?”
“Hmm. I didn’t think about it.
I don’t want to race all my life.”
“What do you want to do?”
“I want to sleep under a banyan tree on a makeshift pillow while the leaves rustle and the bees buzz.
I want to hop over the meadows near the hills and swim in the pond.”
“You can do all these things this very moment.
Forget the race.
You are here today but you will be gone tomorrow.”
I woke up from my sleep.
The ducks in the pond looked happy.
I jumped into the pond, startling them for a moment.
They looked at me quizzically.
“Weren’t you supposed to be racing with the tortoise today?”
“It’s pointless.
An exercise in futility.
All I want is to be here.
Hopefully, someday, someone will tell the world my story,
𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 !!
Live your life according to your standards, and not to those of your loved ones, family members, relatives, friends, colleagues, competitors or the world.
Awesome thought… Really apt in today’s world ❤️
Thanks Namrata
Very true sir.. Defination of satisfaction has changed over years..
We all know importance of excercise and meditation for good lifestyle and stress management.. but majority of us are busy in rat race…. rather than being busy all the time we should learn to be easy..
we only know that, there are granthas which are perfect guide to healthy living (like bhagvadgeeta, ramayan, Mahabharat) which we should read once in life time and try to incorporate in daily life.. we only know that we should..
It’s never too late to realise and change..
We are blessed with smarter new generation.. Schools also need to change pattern and incorporate meditation, ethics and spiritual sessions in syllabus.. which will help to build emotionally and mentally healthier generations..
Life is certainly a marathon.. let’s learn to focus on peace rather than pace..
Wow Smita! Pleasantly surprised to see your expressive side – I really like when you said “…rather than being busy all the time, we should learn to be easy.” and “… let’s learn to focus on peace rather than pace.” Thanks a ton for your insights.
It’s good to have in a race.. as motion less life becomes contaminated which affects people around. Being in race will keep u moving and motivating but the RACE SHOULD BE WITH ONESELF.. everytime one needs to achieve higher than the previous achievement ..
Very precisely explained Nimeshbhai.
Hi Uma ben, you have nailed it. Race should be with Oneself. Unfortunately, at times we just see others, compare ourselves with them and become unhappy.
True sir…. we always learn from you that don’t race to be the first in life, watch and learn from those who race to be the first and be better then them.
Thanks Dhamu.
I think, currently life is like 20:20 Cricket.
Play a quick game for quick recognition.
The reason is no on has time and patience to either play or see a test match.
Many things has changed
75 mm screen is replaced by an 8 inch touch screen. People prefers OTT platform over cinema hall.
Rapid chess feels more challanging now a days. It portrays quick decision making and immediate reaction time to implement tactics and strategies to win the game.
Life is a multiple 100 meters race. For no one is happy with just a single marathon victory. They want many more challenges and win all formats of games in one life.
But these people don’t live for themselves.
They live for name and recognition.
The question remains un-answered. Do they really live?
Hi Sachin, thanks for sharing your perspective. I liked it – “Life is a multiple 100 meters race.”
Wow sir ,
Again u win many hearts by the concept which is fact of current lifestyle.
Even in case of food which is fuel of our body, it’s organ people want it to be delivered fast . So this concept of fast food is in trend now .
I remember one poem which I learnt in school at my childhood age
“What is this life full of care We have no time to stand and stare no time to see in broad daylight streams full of stars like skies at night?”
Hats off sir👌👍
Thanks Trupti for sharing your thoughts and experience. Really appreciate.
